3 Reasons to Shop Vintage in 2016

As we start a new year, we are usually reminded of the saying that goes, “Out with the old, in with the new.” It’s a time to start fresh and work toward accomplishing the things that we weren’t able to in the year that has since long past. For us fashionistas, it’s mostly a time to revamp our wardrobes with the latest designer collections. How about taking a different approach this time around? Ignore the urge to stock up on items from the 2016 ready-to-wear collections and head to your favourite online vintage clothing websites. Need some more convincing?

Here are three reasons why you should shop vintage this year:

  1. Quality. Let’s face it – they use to make things better. And when we say they, we mean the outfitters and seamstresses in the nineteenth and twentieth century who worked for countless hours to construct durable garments. This is particularly true for vintage work wear that served a purely utilitarian function. Thomas Burberry, for example, invented gabardine in 1901; a breathable yet waterproof fabric used for the iconic trench coat that was once used on expeditions to Antarctica.  This is not to say that we don’t have great craftsmanship happening at present but the clothing of past eras were made with quality and not quantity in mind.
  2. Uniqueness. There is nothing more upsetting than buying the dress that you’ve been eyeing for weeks only to find out that your best mate has it in a different colour. When you shop vintage, it is almost guaranteed that you will find one-of-a-kind pieces that you won’t see anywhere else. Many of the garments from centuries past were handmade for wearer. You’ll also find colours, patterns fabrics that reflect the period in which they were manufactured. Who doesn’t love the silks and lace from the 1920s?
  3. History. You find the chiffon blouse while browsing an online vintage shop and don’t hesitate to buy it. After it’s delivered, you immediately try it on. But what captivates you most is not the fit or the feel – it’s the thoughts of who was the person that owned it before you. What was their story? When and where did they buy it? How did it end up in your hands? It’s likely you’ll never know. Shopping vintage offers a sense of mystery and allure. It is almost as if you’ve managed to become part of the continuation of someone’s story.

We’ve failed to mention the countless other reasons why you should consider adding vintage pieces to your wardrobe this year but one thing is for sure: you won’t regret it. Stay tuned for more posts on all-things vintage! In the meantime, take a look at our latest arrivals.
